This interactive tool estimates an insurer's unpaid claims (case reserves plus IBNR) by projecting a paid-loss development triangle to its ultimate value using the volume-weighted chain-ladder method.
This is a paid-loss development triangle: accident years down, maturity across. The estimator runs a volume-weighted chain ladder: it reads how losses have grown, projects each year out to its ultimate value, and the gap between paid-to-date and ultimate is the indicated unpaid. Edit any blue cell and every projection re-settles. The same engine, with judgment layered on top, sits behind a Statement of Actuarial Opinion.
Worked example using sample figures, shown to illustrate how the chain-ladder method develops losses to ultimate. It is one of several methods an actuary would consider.
